the magic of the
south luangwa
The South Luangwa National Park is a pristine wilderness in eastern Zambia, and is part of the broader Luangwa Valley. The Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants.
Added to this, there is an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip. Our guests often comment that ‘there’s something around every corner’.

fionasmithkenya2024-11-24 Wonderful safari experience I loved my stay here. The safari tents were very comfortable with a host of wildlife on your doorstep. The morning safaris and night drives were wonderful. I was lucky to have Malama as a guide and Smart as a spotter. They were so knowledgeable about the wildlife and we saw so much. I was amazed at how unafraid the wildlife were of the vehicle. We got some really close up sightings and were able to watch the animals “being themselves” at no time did they seem stressed thanks to Malama’s professionalism. I particularly liked the way that breakfast and afternoon tea were taken at a table with your guide and the rest of the group in your jeep . It meant that you got to know each other a bit. The food was amazing and the whole staff team were so friendly ( always remembering your name) and professional. I was sad to leave and hope that I will be back one day. Monica S2024-11-02 Awesome experience with exceptional staff! We stayed in a classic safari tent with views out over a wildlife patch that brought us elephant, impala, bushbuck, and baboons to observe every day whilst we sat on the covered veranda. The big bed with mozzie net was extremely comfortable and the adjoining bathroom had all we needed. Meals were excellent and what stands out about this camp is the exceptional personal care provided by each and every one of the staff. They knew our names, our dietary needs, would bring us chilled water wherever we happened to settle in the grounds almost as if they anticipated our potential need. We had a brilliant guide called Kennedy who was so informative and patient as well as having almost a sixth sense for the presence of animals during our game drives. It was testimony to the ethos of the lodge that all the owners made a point of meeting the guests and chatting to them as if they were personal house guests. We appreciated that, and the wonderful facilities they have set up such as the tree hammock and "pool with a view". Lastly the game viewing just across the bridge from dawn drive to evening sunset was just fabulous! Chipili Chikamba2024-10-30 Flatdogs rocks. It’s an always a pleasure to come back to Flatdogs with its vibrant staff, well orchestrated schedules for wake up, start off and game drives. It doesn’t matter how many times you have been here the guides are enthusiastic, a great source of knowledge and eager to respond to questions and requests. Flatdogs also offers a unique clientele that I always find interesting to interact with on the drives and around meals. This particular trip was very memorable owing to particularly great sightings and great meals. The classic tent was more than great for relaxation, photo review and refreshing cold showers in the high Luangwa temperatures. In the night giant figures of elephants walked by as is the custom enhancing the experience of being in this untamed wilderness. Hope to visit again in the coming year 😊. Rebecca L2024-10-25 Incredible camp and Guides in South Luangwa My boyfriend and I stayed at Flatdogs in September 2024 and cannot recommend it enough. From the spacious tents to the delicious food to the incredible view across the river from the camp, everything was perfect. We particularly enjoyed being woken up by an elephant grazing on a tree next to our tent on the first night, that certainly doesn’t happen back home in the UK!! We loved the friendly and welcoming nature of the camp. Every single one of the staff worked hard to make us feel comfortable and at home. Jess, Ade and Paulo have built an incredible ethos and environment for people who are passionate about wildlife and want to experience it in a natural environment and in a responsible way – they have absolutely succeeded in doing this. There are frequently elephants and hippos wondering through the camp, which is fantastic and so exciting but the staff also work extremely hard to keep the guests safe and we felt totally safe the whole time. One element that we loved was that their guides don’t use radios when spotting, which means that you’re reliant on the skills of your guide (along with some luck), but when you do experience wildlife, often your jeep is the only one there! This makes each encounter unique and special, without several more jeeps and tourists creating noise and scaring away the animals (as we have experienced previously). South Luangwa is a truly special place to see wildlife and get up close to nature. However, the absolute star was Jonathan (our guide), who without a doubt has some of the best bush eyes of any guide!! He is friendly and personable, with a clear passion for wildlife. Over the 4 days we were there, he spotted and tracked so much amazing wildlife, including leopards mating, a huge buffalo herd coming to drink during a sundowner, wild dogs, elephants crossing the river, giraffes play fighting, many lionesses and lion cubs and one of the most special moments we have ever had on safari – watching a female leopard with a pregnant impala that she had just caught. He tracked the leopard from the impala warning cries. We watched for over an hour as the leopard killed the impala, took out it’s organs and then carried it up a tree. There was not a single other jeep in sight!! We will never forget our experiences here – thank you Jonathan, our trip would not have been the same without you! Flatdogs is the best Safari camp we have stayed in and is priced extremely reasonably given the quality of service, food, wildlife etc. If you are considering visiting South Luangwa and staying at Flatdogs, just do it – you wont find anywhere better! Thank you to all of the staff for making our stay so special, we can’t wait to come back! shouquot h2024-10-23 The best safari holiday of our lives - at Flatdogs Camp, South Luangwa National Park. Flatdogs Camp in South Luangwa is unarguably the best safari trip experience we have ever had ( and we have done Masai Mara, Tsavo, Ol Pejeta, Serengeti and more in the best of camps and lodges). What sets it apart, among many things, is the phenomenal care the team takes in ensuring you are comfortable. I mean right from reservations to pick up from the airport to being received at the camp to the meals to the game drives to the poolside siesta to the final goodbyes - no other place has made us feel as much at home and cared for. From Jess and Adrian's super warm hosting to Anna and Dave's care throughout, from Bwalya's game drives and guiding expertise to Carol's handling of our meals, from Lydia's reception to Israel's being on call for any query, from Shamilimo's fabulous dishes to Nicholas' protective vigilance - and the efforts of everyone else on board - it is an establishment with a lot of heart, and the expertise to go with it. Now for the experience beyond the heavenly campsite. More than 45 lions sighted in 4 days. Leopard cubs, leopard mamma atop a tree, down on the ground, a male leopard walking ahead of us caught in the headlights of our safari vehicle at night, lions devouring a buffalo as a herd of elephants watch on, 20 elephants crossing the river amidst an african sunset while we sip our sundowners, Elephants practicing fights, and a hundred other joys! Bottom line - we have never been so lucky. Morning sunrise drive with a coffee and cookies break in between. Afternoon sunset drives with sundowners amidst the setting sun and then the night part of the drive going back to the camp. All surreal, real and beyond what mere words can describe. We were also treated to an exclusive and personalised dinner under the stars by team flatdogs on our last night - which was touching. We had a late flight on check out day, and were graciously offered the use of a chalet till departure time. These little but inimitably humane touches added so much to the experience. We will keep going back, as much as we can, as long as we can. Thank you, team Flatdogs! Your being the first hospitality outfit in Zambia to be awarded the Fair Trade Tourism certificate is more than well deserved.🍷 Richard N2024-10-21 Superb My fourth time at Flatdogs over 20 years and each one beats the last. Fantastic location - great food - quality accommodation and awesome safaris Was lucky enough to stay in the beautiful Croca Nest this time Totally recommended Thank you to all the Flatdogs team for an incredible time Andy P2024-10-10 A Special Place We have now stayed at Flatdogs twice in the last two years, and have loved our stays on both occasions. The location is really stunning on the banks of the Luangwa river and although in a Game Management Area rather than the Park, the wildlife we experienced within the lodge area was sensational. We were there for three days this time and had elephants continuously entering and wandering around the camp it was brilliant. The tents that we stayed in were lovely and so spacious, the views outside of the tents across the river were amazing with impala and puku etc joining for breakfast. However it is Ade, Jess, and all of the wonderful staff that really makes Flatdogs so special. They do anything to make our stay special, I wasn't too well for a day or so, and everyone was there to make life better for me etc. Our guide was Kennedy who was so good, and again he managed to find us some amazing game viewing over our time at Flatdogs. Well done Flatdogs. We plan to return soon for a longer stay. Lucie T2024-10-10 Possibly the best camp in the South Luangwa! We stayed at Flatdogs to celebrate a 60th birthday this September. From start to finish our stay was superb, the hospitality is exceptional and the quality and choice of food is outstanding. We were lucky enough to stay in both a luxury tent and the Jackalberry Treehouse, both were wonderful, but the Treehouse is AMAZING!! It's so magical to sleep with just a mosquito net, but feel safe and comfortable as well. The guiding team at Flatdogs are brilliant and make every drive or walk special. I can't wait to come back. harold592024-10-09 An amazing safari experience We had a wonderful 4 days at Flatdogs safari camp. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed and made to feel special by Jess, Adrian and the whole team. They also located and retrieved our delayed luggage from the local airport. The lodge is beautifully situated, with well appointed accommodation and a lovely communal area. We saw many animals roaming outside our accommodation and lots of birdlife. The atmosphere was always warm and friendly, the food was excellent and the morning and evening safaris were wonderful. Our guide, Chris, was knowledgeable and patient, and gave us the most memorable experiences tailored to our needs. We felt safe at all times. We were also very impresssed by the committment to the local community and the wide variety of charitable projects run by the camp and its owners. We would definitely recommend this camp for an unforgettable safari experience. MrsSchumacher2024-10-09 Absolutely Superb My husband and I stayed here for 4 nights in September. The camp is superb and all the staff are fantastic. The lodges are spacious and extremely clean. When we arrived we needed some laundry done as we hadn't quite packed enough. All of the items were washed and ironed, back our room within a few hours without any fuss. There is absolutely everything you need, even a whistle in case you need any assistance. The food is delicious but watch out for the cheeky monkeys who will try and steal your bread. The staff are always around in case there is anything you need. We went on a 4 day Safari and Chris, our guide, was brilliant. There were 5 people in our group and Chris did everything he could to keep everyone happy so we could all get the chance to see our favourite animals and birds. He is so knowledgeable and answered every question we had. We saw the most wonderful, beautiful animals and it's a trip we'll never forget. The morning safari ended with Tea & Biscuits and Sundown Tipple and Nibbles were wonderful at the end of the afternoon/evening. Simply fantastic from start to finish.

Our Philosophy
After a fair few years (27) in tourism in the Luangwa, we know that we need to look after the hospitality needs of several different types of traveller. We are also keen to do more than just “our bit” for the communities we work with. In the last twenty years we have built up a loyal following of international guests who feel that our accommodation and way of doing things (not to mention the price), suits them just as well if not better than the high end ‘luxury’ lodges. We have tried to create a warm and friendly atmosphere in camp, our staff get to know all the guests while they are here, it’s a place where both friends can be made and safari dreams come true! We would rather invest in having the best safari guides who fully appreciate this wildlife haven and the whole ecology of the Park, than provide gold taps!
We’re all visitors here
Our Safaris
We have made Flatdogs the most ‘family friendly’ camp in the Luangwa. This means we have a pool, plenty of space for children and a children’s menu in the restaurant at children’s chow times. Children are not merely tolerated at Flatdogs….. we actually like having them! A nanny/watchman service is also available for when it’s grown ups’ playtime.
At Flatdogs we aim to offer a little piece of the true Africa with a few of the more useful inventions of the modern world! But don’t panic – we are blessed with lots of room so if you prefer to listen to the sounds of the wild, you can. Flatdogs is all about the freedom of choice!

the magic of the
south luangwa

Simply fantastic from start to finish.
about us – flatdogs
