Flatdogs is the closest camp to the Mfuwe main gate of South Luangwa National Park. All our South Luangwa safari activities are led by a fully-qualified guide, and include morning drives, night drives, and walking safaris.
The professionalism and skills of our guides are what get you to the best sightings with the fewest number of humans around. We normally limit numbers to six guests per vehicle and our guides use their guiding skills, not their radios, to find the game. You might sit listening to the sounds of the bush, alone in the wilderness, when the guide hears an alarm call. The Luangwa Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants! Added to this, there’s an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip and our guests often comment that ‘there’s something around every corner!’
There are several “big 5” destinations in Africa. But few of them can offer the true wilderness feel, professional guiding and diverse habitats that the South Luangwa National Park offers. SOUTH LUANGWA’S BEAUTY
Although no longer a “Big 5” destination due to the loss of rhinos in the 1980s, South Luangwa remains one of Africa’s most sought-after parks, offering exceptional wildlife and top-tier guiding—without the crowds.
Home to diverse herbivores, the park boasts three endemic species, including the striking Thornicroft’s giraffe. Elephant and buffalo roam freely between the park and surrounding GMAs, while abundant antelope provide ample prey for predators.
Luangwa’s main predators—lion, leopard, hyena, and wild dog—are frequently seen, with wild dog numbers steadily rising.
The park is especially renowned for leopards, which thrive thanks to ethical guiding and the rare opportunity for night drives.
Birdwatchers will also be delighted, with vibrant species seen year-round, particularly during the lush summer months. Each safari offers a chance to uncover unexpected avian treasures!
